Essential pathway of Fe-S cluster biogenesis in M. tuberculosis

Combining biochemistry and structural approaches, BioCat team characterized for the first time Rv1464 and Rv1465 proteins.

RV1464 is a cysteine desulfurase and RV1465 a zinc-dependent protein. Zinc is required for RV1465 sulfurtransferase activity and for the SufS-SufU interaction. Mtb SufS-SufU complex is more resistant to oxidative stress than E. coli SufS-SufE and that the presence of zinc in SufU is likely responsible for this improved resistance, explaining why Mtb possesses a SufSU system rather than SufSE.
