Singlet oxygen destabilizes the zinc fingers

Will the molecular basis of the detection of singlet oxygen (a highly reactive form of oxygen) by zinc finger proteins reveal? Using model peptides, researchers at our laboratory have shown that singlet oxygen was able to oxidize zinc fingers which in turn caused the release of zinc and consequently the loss of the associated structure.
