Researchers in our laboratory [collaboration] have characterized and modified an enzyme of the Bubblegum subfamily in the photosynthetic eukaryote Microchloropsis gaditana, an oleaginous microalgae used for the production of lipids. In mutants of M. gaditana, excess saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were diverted to triacylglycerol, suggesting strategies to improve the oil content of this microalgae.
