The development of photoelectrochemical cells is a way to produce decarbonized hydrogen using an artificial photosynthesis approach, but it is necessary to simplify their fabrication, optimize their performance and ensure that their production can be deployed on a large scale. We describe the simplified construction and optimization via its instrumentation of an "artificial leaf" containing only abundant elements and with 2 % solar energy to hydrogen conversion efficiency.
